how to make the best, evillest hot chocolate from scratch:

step 1: follow the directions from the Hershey's Unsweetened Cocoa canister, except:
* add more cocoa than you need
* add a generous dash of cinnamon
* add orange extract
step 2: DRINK IT, BITCH!

mmm, yummy!

INGREDIENTS (for one cup):

- 2 tablespoons sugar (i probably added more than that... i eyeball everything)
- 2 to 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, depending on how intense you want the cocoa flavor
- dash salt
- generous dash of cinnamon, to taste
- 1 cup milk
- a little bit of water
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract (eyballed once again)
- 1/4 tsp orange extract (yep. eyeballed.)

mix dry ingredients and water on stovetop. bring to a boil while stirring constantly, for about two minutes. add milk, vanilla and orange extract. do not boil after adding milk. pour into large mug.

my level of frustration has been growing rapidly of late, for two reasons: 1) i have hit a wall on the workfront (haven't been able to refill on certain essential supplies for a while now) and 2) ALL MY FUCKING COMIC BOOKS HAVE DISAPPEARED. okay, not all of them. but i swear to god i had a ton and so many have come up missing. i even looked in the fucking basement, and all i found was ONE ISSUE OF THE PERHAPANAUTS. what the FUCK?? are they buried in someone's backyard? are they sealed up in an oildrum and encased in concrete??? did they elope with my DVDs of Rocko's Modern Life?! WHERE IN BLUE BLAZES ARE THEY??

:seethe, curse, rant, rave:

okay, now that i've gotten that (mostly) out of my system. i have been reading my big black and white compilations of DC's House of Secrets and House of Mystery. at least i have them. :sigh: i have fallen hard for the two hosts, Cain and Abel. they are all i have been wanting to draw lately, my sketchbook is full of them (you can tell if you've been by my deviantart account). but they aren't all i love about these books: the artwork is great. i am so partial to the older style of comic book art... and this stuff is really gorgeous, even in black and white. i'd kill to see it in color.

fun facts:
* i have been wearing my slippers everywhere- around the house, on walks, to the grocery store... and i don't care a bit.
* i finally managed to get my digital hands on a couple of Maureen O'Hara mp3s that i've wanted for a long time, including her version of Danny Boy, which long ago spoiled me for every other version of the song
* i have a mad urge to make latkes, and i am not even a Jew (i'd be the worst Jew ever, i love bacon too much)
* Tim Curry does an audiobook version of A Christmas Carol. never been into audiobooks, but that sounded really amazing... until i heard the preview, at which time i realized that no words could ever properly express how truly wonderful it is.
* the dog cannot seem to decide whether she is surprisingly smart or unbelievably dumb.
* yay for broccoli pizza
* i cannot settle on which version of the impending apocalypse is more terrifying. please, god, let me at least get to marry Brian before the world ends? but at least we have good solid plan for the Zombie Apocalypse (or Zombocalypse, as it is called by those in the know)... it involves boats. even if zombies CAN swim, they can't catch up to a BOAT! so HAH!
* speaking of marriage and the apocalypse... it'd be great if we could legalize gay marriage before then, eh America?
* i am officially too lazy to either remove this nailpolish, or repaint my nails. it's gotten to the point where 3/4 of my nails are green, and the other 1/4 is bare, staring up at me accusingly, saying "Kathleen, get with the fucking program here."
* i am running out of incense!! my incense drawer is nearly empty! no more Nag Champa! no more sandalwood! no more patchouly or jasmine blossom! =(
* i will be broke for the holidays... so everyone'd better be ready for cookies and chocolate covered pretzels.
* Weird Al Yankovic is still the man.
* So is Leslie West.

love forever,

Which song by The Beatles is your favorite, and why?

this is hard for me, i have been in love with this band since i was a small child and choosing just one would be nearly impossible. i can only list my "top faves:"

*Within You Without You: first off, it's beautiful. i love the sound of the sitar, and the lyrics really vibe with me.
*the Inner Light: much the same reason as Within You Without You. the sitar riff in the beginning is amazing. am i using the right terminology? i don't care.
*Lovely Rita: Sgt. Pepper was the first album i knew- my parents had a vinyl copy. i used to pull it out and stare at it for what seemed like hours together... so the whole album is very dear to my heart (i could honestly list every song from this album in my top favorites, but that might be a bit excessive). this song in particular always appealed to me. it's so... cute.
*Polythene Pam/Mean Mr. Mustard: i love their weirder songs. these two are hilarious. "Mean Mr. Mustard sleeps in the park, shaves in the dark, tryin' to save paper..."
*I'm Only Sleeping: this song has such a strange effect on me. it messes with my brain.
*Dear Prudence: try to stop yourself from swaying side to side while singing along. it's impossible.
*I've Just Seen A Face: one of the sweetest, most relatable "just fallen in love" songs i've ever heard. it captures that elusive feeling so perfectly.
*Hey Bulldog: i can't really say what it is i love about this song, it's just awesome. really singable, and as always, i love the lyrics.
*Don't Pass Me By: Ringoooooooo! =D this song is so much fun.
*Rain: "when the rain comes, they run and hide their heads... they might as well be dead, when the rain comes... when the rain comes. when the sun shines, they slip into the shade, and sip their lemonade, when the sun shines, when the sun shines..."
*Old Brown Shoe: it is clear already that i have a special place in my heart for all of George's compositions. why? because they are all awesome. maybe it is a bit presumptuous of me but i feel like i 'get' a lot of them. his music and lyrics just speak to me.
*Nowhere Man: i can relate to this song so well, that one of my AIM screen names in high school was "aRealNowhereGirl." actually i think i still have that one.
*For No One: i just love a good story song. the story is artfully told and the music fits it well.
*It's All Too Much: do i even have to explain this one? all the explanations for Harrisongs are going to sound eerily similar. yet again: beautiful music, lyrics that blow my mind.
*Yes It Is: it just gets to me.

now i really have to rein myself in before this gets out of control.

What do you think really happened at the end of the movie Inception? Have you ever had a dream that you confused with reality?

i didn't see the movie inception, but i have had plenty of dreams i confused with reality. that probably sounds bad... but it doesn't usually take me long to sort that stuff out. usually it's that kind of thing where you're having a dream, and you dream that you've woken up from the previous dream. that has gotten me more than once. and then once or twice i had a dream that was so mundane i didn't even realize it was a dream until i started talking to people about events that had happened in the dream. that hasn't happened for years. actually i am starting to become lucid. i now have more dreams where i am consciously aware that i am dreaming. not all my dreams are that way, but they are growing in frequency. i don't have any control yet, but it would be very cool down the road to gain that ability.

Old Mocha Dick, what a sight you must have been-
I can but imagine the awe in the hearts of those men
as they watched your ghostly flukes slip down into the deep...
I have heard they caught you in the end.

O moon-pale monster, scarred and stuck with pins,
O leviathan, whose silver fury echoes without end
and smites us still as the centuries creep
then watches the wreckage descend-

O fearsome devourer of myth and legend,
your belly filled with the beaks of the kraken-
what a strange collection of trophies you keep,
like the harpoons still stuck in your skin-

O great beast, whose iron will would never bend,
but splintered wooden ships like leaves upon the wind,
champion of the wild, unruly sea,
who could dive to Hell and back again! ...

And yet, I am told you were bested by men:
your body they butchered for the oil within,
white whale turned black smoke- and the reek
of your pyre did to heaven ascend.

They say they caught you in the end.

They say, great Mocha Dick, that you were slain;
that lamplight and perfume were all that remained,
your teeth yanked out, and carved with ladies fair
who used your spermaceti in their hair.

No more your spectral visage will be spied
like the wrath of a blizzard, but with warm blood inside-
the terror of whalemen, who dared make Nature bow!
Your alabaster throat is silenced now.

That's what they say- ne'er again will you sing,
No more drums in the deep, no more the ring
of your booming voice through the oceans is heard...

Mocha Dick, I don't believe a word.

A desperate boast it was they made,
to calm their quaking souls!
They thought to let your glory fade,
but whose bell truly tolls?

You never were caught! For even now,
as swirling fog rolls off the bay,
I can see the pallor of your brow
and your iv'ry tail as you swim away.

notes: Dude, i LABORED at this. writing lyric poetry is some hard-ass shit.

okay. so i'm sure you have all drawn the line between Mocha Dick and Moby Dick.

Mocha Dick was a real-life white sperm whale, who lived around Herman Melville's time near Mocha Island (which is how he got his name). His story, along with the story of the Nantucket whaleship Essex (which was sunk by another sperm whale) were what inspired the tale of Moby Dick.

I've always been fascinated by that stuff... this poem has been a long time coming, let me tell you.

ps: the whole 'drums in the deep' thing is a reference to the noises that sperm whales make- it's kind of a really loud clicking sound ("like a rifle shot three feet from your ear"). they don't sing like humpback whales and stuff but they do make other noises.
also: the "beaks of the kraken" thing is true. the beaks of giant squids are found en masse, undigested inside sperm whales. how bad ass is that??

hey all. not dead. i know no one cares but i thought i'd just drop in and say something. been very preoccupied for some time now, in the time that led up to my brother's wedding (which was lovely), and now i'm settling into a somewhat normal routine. been drawing and sewing. spending too much time drawing, actually, 'cause i'm participating in what i believe is my sister's first art jam on deviantArt. long story. but there aren't many people in it, and they actually seem to have dropped out... anyway i didn't want her jam to be so empty, so i committed.

so my first batch of messenger bags and ladies' purses made from recycled jeans and clothing are now, i think, in my brother's store. i haven't gotten many updates from him, and not surprisingly, since he's been on his honeymoon. i have a new batch started, still very small because like i said, i've been preoccupied w/ preparing for the wedding. now there is no excuse and i need to buckle down and work. got a little ladies' shoulder bag done, it's made of red corduroy; rather proud of it. pics will prob go up on dA. got one messenger bag done and mostly finished w/ another one. dunno how i'm going to make the next messenger bag, b/c i'm running out of suitable liner materials. i'll have to scrounge around. i always seem to manage. also, i'm gonna make a sweater for the dog, because even though most consider her a large dog, and it is usually small dogs who suffer in the cold, we have noticed she is pretty vulnerable to outside temperatures. so i'm making her something warm for the winter, so that we can still take her on long walks. she needs excersize, yanno?

so... yeah. that's it for now. off to work on the newest messenger bag. once i'm a little more awake, that is. hopefully these carbs will hit me soon.

and now before i go, i will leave you with a video who will make anyone who was ever into Dragon Ball Z piss themselves laughing.

 love y'all
